SNL's Politics Visit CNBC -- But Eminem's No Joke

I finally caught my Tivo'd S.N.L.. I was surprised to see my colleague Alan Murray make a cameo in some lameo skit.

Alan loves to run these short soundbytes (we call them SOTs -- for Sound on Tape) of comedy bits, Jay Leno and the like (I loathe Leno). I think Alan thinks these bits ad some levity as well as insight to the zeitgeist.

But the most political moment-- an indication deep-held political feelings -- came from Eminem (whom I certainly do not loathe).

Mr. Mathers did a terrific rendition of his haunting "We Are American." Among the lyrics: "Fuck money, I don't rap for dead presidents. I'd rather see the president dead."

Indeed, the Secret Service is now supposedly "investigating" Emimem over those lyrics. CNN.com - Secret Service checks Eminem's 'dead president' lyric - Dec. 6, 2003). Though the same article that notes:

" The Secret Service is trying to determine if any action needs to be taken regarding a lyric from rapper Eminem that may be a threat to President Bush."

Also notes:

"A Secret Service probe is routine when something that could be construed as a threat to the president is brought to agents' attention. "

And, old farts, this helpful tidbit:

"'Dead presidents' is slang for cash because of the depiction of several presidents on currency. "

The tune is powerful. The full lyrics are here We Are American -- Eminem.
You won't see the mainstream media quoting this part:

All the people up top on the side and the middle
Come together lets all bomb and swamp just a little
Just let it gradually build from the front to the back
All you can see is a sea of people some white and some black
Don’t matter what color, all that matters we gathered together
To celebrate for the same cause don’t matter the weather
If it rains let it rain, yea the wetter the better
They ain't gonna stop us they can't, we stronger now more than ever.

And dig this:

Maybe we can reach Al-Queda through my speech
Let the President answer a higher anarchy
Strap him with an AK-47, let him go, fight his own war
Let him impress daddy that way
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our own soil
No more psychological warfare, to trick us to thinking that we ain't loyal
If we don't serve our own country, we're patronizing a hero
Look in his eyes its all lies
The stars and stripes, they've been swiped, washed out and wiped
And replaced with his own face, Mosh now or die.

Don't look for Alan Murray to run that one.

PS: I'm off the air today, working ahead on a few stories and voting! (Gotta uphold my end of the Votergasm bargain.)
